“Military Square” is finally complete! Located on the grounds of the Bassett Historical Center, this area serves as a small “thank you” to our Veterans and their families for their military service and sacrifices that were made. The names included in “Military Square” all have ties to the Martinsville-Henry County area. Dedicated 11 November 2016 was a bench commemorating the 50th anniversary of the DMZ Conflict and Korean Conflict. On the front of the bench are the names of five local servicemen who served on the DMZ. On the back of the bench are the names of 120 soldiers who served in the Korean Conflict. Dedicated 11 November 2018, the Vietnam Wall makes up the center of this area. The wall has a total of 345 names of Veterans who served in Vietnam in country. Twenty-six of those listed were killed in action and are listed in the top middle. Those killed in action were: Lonnie Douglas Alley, Frank Joseph Bowles, Lonnie Allen Brooks, Frederick Curtis Bullington, Jerry Allen Dillard, Samuel Harrison Easley II, Douglas Lee Foley, Johnny Michael Hairston, Larry Davis Hatcher, Robert Vernon Holland, Louis Allen Jefferson, Lewis Dean Lamkin, Lewis Randolph Lovell, Jr., Charles Edward Manns, Alphonso S. Martin, Harry Pemberton Martin, Linwood Dwight Martin, Calvin Wetzel Ramsey, Toney Elwood Seay, James Allen Souther, Bernard Allen Sowder, Gordon Elliott Stone, Clovis Bernard Walker, Morris Alfred Whitehead, David Wayne Wilson, and Samuel Earnest Witcher. The flagpole and flags were donated by six area businesses and organizations. These were given in honor and memory of ALL Veterans and were dedicated 11 November 2022. Our final piece of “Military Square” was the addition of a Vietnam Bench. The 105 Veterans who missed the deadline to have their names included on the wall were honored by the installation of a bench. The bench was dedicated 11 November 2024 and serves to compliment the wall. The Bassett Historical Center recognizes and thanks ALL Veterans and their families for their service. All gave some – some gave all. | ||
