George Charlie Cox was born 25 October 1925 in Elamsville in Patrick County, VA. He was the first of ten children born to Jesse James Cox and Mary Alice Wright. At the age of three during 1928, his family moved to Ramsey Street, North Bassett, Virginia. He grew up and was educated in the Bassett area.

In 1941, George took a job delivering special delivery mail for the Bassett Post Office. Then in 1942, he went to work for the Bassett Furniture Company making army truck beds. On 31 Dec 1943, he was drafted into the Army and reported for basic training 21 January 1944. His service was with the 258th Engineer Combat Battalion, serving in the European Theatre of Operations. He was discharged in May 1946 and returned to work at Bassett Furniture Industries. George re-enlisted in the Army in 1948 making it a career. He retired 1 June 1966 after more than twenty years of active duty. After retiring from the Army, George went to work in November 1968 for Sales Knitting Company (later, Tultex Corporation). George married Irene Marie Caldwell on 17 June 1948. They had three children, Charles, Steven, and Vera.

George served as historian of the Patrick Henry Allied Families and as vice chairman of the Martinsville Planning Commission. He was a member of Chatham Heights Baptist Church, of the Martinsville and Henry County Historical Society, and a lifetime member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

George loved to research his family history and realized the importance of preserving the items passed down through the generations. He spent more than eight years documenting the history of his family. In his research, he traveled along the east coast, studying public archives and interviewing family members from different branches of the family tree. The fruit of his labor was a book published in 1990 entitled David Ross Cox (1841-1900) and Cynthia Thenia Hall Cox (1846-1915) and Their Descendants.

George Charlie Cox died 9 March 2007. His research and collection were donated to the Bassett Historical Center.
