The True Meaning Of Roots
A New Year has begun and the days that we thought were going fast in 2012 will now be going probably even faster for us in 2013. We make plans for the New Year, we make New Year''s resolutions; we think about what projects we want to begin, what projects we would like to finish. Sometimes those plans that we made last year seem to get lost in the rush of everyday life, and here they are again, in our thoughts for another New Year.
Winter is here and so is another New Year. For those of you who have often thought about beginning your family history, now is the time to begin. We have workshops for genealogy and family history in January and February; Genealogy 1 on Tuesday, 8 January, at 11am and in February we have Genealogy 2 on Tuesday, 12 February, at 11am. Call the Historical Center to register for these workshops, 629-9191.
When there is a dreary day and you are feeling really low or unimportant, stop for a minute and start counting how many people it took to get you here on this earth. Are you curious as to your lineage? We all know that it took two people, our parents, to produce us. Each parent has two parents, so that is giving us four grandparents. The number always multiplies by two so you have eight great-grandparents; 16 great, great-grandparents; 32 great, great, great-grandparents…that is only the beginning!
Someone (author unknown) has calculated that if you figured an average of about 25 years between each generation, you would discover that 525 years ago there were about 1,048,576 people on this planet beginning the chain of reproductions which led to YOU!
So, begin writing down names of your parents, the four grandparents, the eight great-grandparents and the names of your sixteen great, great-grandparents ... that is, if you know their names. If you don''t and would like to find out this information, bring what you have written to the Historical Center and we will help you find more of your family history information. Some people research as a hobby, some research to find pieces to the family puzzle, while others want to find information as important as medical history. Whatever your reason for researching your lineage, come to the Center and we''ll be happy to help. Genealogy is a great winter project or a great project to begin anytime!
